About Wood Floors

Hardwood vs. Laminate

Hardwood vs. Laminate

While laminate flooring can mimic the appearance of hardwood, there are significant differences between the two.

Material

Hardwood is solid or engineered natural wood. Laminate is a synthetic product made of compressed fiberboard with a photographic image of wood grain on top, covered by a protective layer.

Appearance

Hardwood has the authentic look, feel, and warmth of natural wood with unique grain patterns. Laminate has improved dramatically but trained eyes can still tell the difference — it lacks the depth and variation of real wood.

Durability

Hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times over 100+ years. Laminate cannot be refinished and typically lasts 15-25 years before needing replacement.

Value

Hardwood adds significant value to your home. Laminate does not add the same value and may even be viewed as a negative by discerning buyers.

Moisture

Laminate is generally more resistant to moisture than solid hardwood, though engineered hardwood bridges this gap. Neither should be submerged in standing water.

Cost

Laminate is less expensive upfront, but when you factor in the lifespan and refinishing capability of hardwood, the cost per year of use favors hardwood.

Sound & Feel

Hardwood has a natural, warm feel underfoot and a solid sound. Laminate can feel hollow and produce a clicking sound when walked on.

Our Recommendation

For any home where you plan to stay long-term, or where resale value matters, hardwood is the clear winner. Laminate can be a practical choice for rental properties or temporary situations.
