Measuring for Flooring

Measuring for Flooring

Accurate measurements are essential for an accurate estimate. Here's how to measure your space.

Basic Room Measurement

Measure the length and width of each room in feet. Multiply length × width to get square footage. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, divide into rectangles, measure each, and add them together.

Hallways and Closets

Don't forget to include hallways, closets, and any nooks that will receive flooring. Measure each separately and add to your total.

Waste Factor

Add 10% to your total for standard installations to account for cutting waste. For diagonal installations, add 15%. For rooms with many angles or doorways, add 15-20%.

Doorways

Note where doorways connect rooms — this affects the installation direction and transition pieces needed.

Stairs

For stairs, measure the width of the staircase, the depth of each tread, and the height of each riser. Count the total number of steps. Stair installation requires additional materials and labor.

Tips for Accuracy

Use a steel tape measure, not a cloth one. Measure at floor level, not at hip height. Double-check your measurements — measure twice, order once.
